North Uist Estate has long been a Mecca for anglers from all over the world and is one of the few places in Scotland that can provide not only quality sea trout, salmon and brown trout fishing, but also exceptional stalking and wildfowling shooting. Described as the perfect all-round estate the island contains a staggering 800 freshwater lochs and lochans and is host to a blanket of conservation designations. The angler can expect to spend a day in the company of black-throated divers, arctic terns, wild swans, short-eared owls, hen harriers and even glimpse the occasional sea eagle and otter.

The jewel in the crown is unquestionably the sea trout, which average 3 – 3 ½ lbs. Which, in dry summers, can be fished for either side of low tide, in any of the 14 recognised sea pools. Otherwise, fishing is mainly from boats located on the most popular lochs. The Estate extends to 60,000 acres and covers the majority of the island providing the angler with the freedom to seek out the remoter lochs on foot, whilst non-fishing companions often choose to take part in many of the local organised activities or perhaps explore the miles of deserted beaches and historic sites scattered throughout the island.

The fishing, which is available to the general public, is organised by daily roster at Lochmaddy Hotel. Preference is given to the residents of Lochmaddy Hotel and Langass Lodge Hotel and guests staying at Lochmaddy Hotel also receive discounted fishing as part of their stay. Both hotels are cosy traditional sporting establishments, equipped with drying facilities, excellent food, and a well-stocked bar. They are also able to arrange the services of a local ghillie and give practical advice on tackle, flies and choice of a suitable loch.

Sea trout are in the sea pools from April till October moving into freshwater from July onwards: salmon arrive in late June and can be found in good numbers from July to September in the Skealter, Geireann Mill and Grogarry systems; brown trout are at their best from April till August. There is always a fish to be sought whatever the timing of a visit.

A bag limit of three sea trout applies to each person per day, however, anglers are encouraged to adopt their own self-imposed catch and release policy for sea trout.

Anglers are encouraged to bring adequate waterproof clothing and lifejackets. Lifejackets (if required) and permits can be obtained from the Lochmaddy Hotel and anyone requiring further information should contact the Estate Factor.
