It’s been an excellent July and August in the Outer Hebrides for anglers. Good water levels and strong persistent winds have helped with the catches.
Grimersta recorded 139 salmon/grilse during July with the best being three 10lb salmon; B. Stevens had one from the Bridge Pool on a Silver Stoat during July 9th P. Anderson fishing the same pool two days later had one on an Ally’s Shrimp and B. Lovering landed one in the Battery Pool that he hooked on a Blue Elver on July 11th.
Some notable catches during July were: C. Curtis with eight grilse to 7lb during the ‘Grimersta’ week 4th – 10th, the same week saw S. Hodges landing eleven grilse to 7lb and also during that same week, B. Lovering had thirteen fish to 10lb.
August (up to the 27th) guests landed 93 salmon/grilse with the largest being: 9lb from the Kelt Pool on a Collie dog for C. Anderson and a similar sized fish for G. Rodgers from Loch Faoghail an Tuim which was hooked on a Muddler.
The Stornoway Angling Association (SAA) boat on Loch Langabhat was used on seven occassions during July with 14 grilse being landed. There was also another three landed during August 1st.
The first salmon to be recorded from the SAA boat on Loch an Fhir Mhaoil was caught by R. Bell during August 5th and was hooked on a Muddler.
South Uist Estate waters have produced some stunning brown trout and sea trout over July and August with decent numbers of grilse/salmon also, some of which can be seen on the ‘Catches Gallery’ on this website. Tony Connor and Scott Clydesdale had an excellent day on Loch Fada during August 19th, landing 19 sea trout including fish of 7lb and 3lb-12oz. Scott also landed a 4lb-2oz grilse the same day. Tony also landed brown trout of 4lb-8oz and 6lb-2oz from Loch West Ollay during August 23rd and an 8lb-2oz salmon from Loch Roag on the 22nd.
During July Alec Towns, ghillied by Ian Kennedy, had an enjoyable week among the sea trout landing fish of 5lb-2oz, 7lb-8oz and 8lb-8oz. Not to be outdone, ghillie, Ian Kennedy had sea trout of 5lb-4oz and 8lb-12oz.
Ian Kennedy, fishing Loch Roag during August 12th between 13.30 and 18.00, landed 4 grilse and six sea trout….not too bad an afternoon!
